Sure to please Dec 16, 2008 Mr. Box knows how to construct a great story. In this book, Joe Pickett is uprooted from his normal setting and forced to go fill in for a ranger in upscale Jackson Hole, Wyoming. His predecessor committed suicide, and Pickett soon finds himself drawn into a web of intrigue that surrounds an exclusive land development. Animal rights activists, unethical hunters, and a seductress also bedevil the stalwart ranger. The characters are drawn with intelligence and sensitivity, the plot moves at a ripping pace, and the story has actual meat on it.
This is the second Joe Pickett novel that I've read, along with "Trophy Hunt." From these reads, I've learned that Mr. Box likes to end his stories with an O. Henry, "Tales of the Unexpected" twist. Obviously most readers love this, given the success of the series. For me it destroys the reality that this fine author has spent a couple hundred pages constructing. I wished the realness of Joe's world could have lasted through the last 10 pages of the book.
With that reservation, a skillfully written and enjoyable read.
Reviewer: Elizabeth Clare, co-author of the historical novel "To the Ends of the Earth: The Last Journey of Lewis & Clark"
Fun and educational - Box hits another one out of the park Jul 05, 2008 Great story, continuing refinement of series characters, even handed treatment of the pros and cons of various government regulations. A thinking mans western.
Joe Pickett series Nov 12, 2007 I liked all of the Joe Pickett series which I have read so far, and I have read the first four novels. I have ordered and received four additional volumes, and I'm enjoying the second book received, which is the fourth in the series. My cousin turned me on to this particular author by giving me the first two books in the series, and I pass them along to a friend when I finish reading them and he is also enjoying the series.
His Best! Aug 31, 2007 The Jackson Hole setting provides Joe Pickett with great heros, villains and background. I hope he can return to the Tetons again.
out of site Jul 23, 2007 Discovered Box few months ago. I've never read an author who keeps the story moving along consistently with an exciting and absorbing pace Box creates a character with faults, feelings, and frailties. .
