Extreme is a US Rock band that achieved popularity in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Some of Extreme's influences, Queen and Van Halen (the latter of which Gary Cherone would eventually join and later leave), are readily apparent from their music's multi-part vocal harmonies and electric guitar tone and instrumental techniques. The band lends the listener a sound that blends the genre of glam metal with the shredding guitar work of thrash metal. Being asked about their style, Extreme categorized their music as 'Funky Metal'. Extreme has released four studio albums, two EPs (in Japan) and two compilations since its formation. The band was one of the most successful of those from the early 1990s, selling over 10 million albums worldwide. Extreme rose to fame with its 1990 release Pornograffitti, which peaked at #10 on the Billboard 200.

Not Extreme enough.... Dec 10, 2008 Like most of these other reviewers, I have been a fan of Extreme since I first saw the video for "Kid Ego" on MTV's Headbanger's Ball. Unlike most of the reviewers, however, I fail to hear what they hear. Though the harmonies are there, the guitar playing is there, and the overall musicianship is there, the solid tracks are not. If it had to be compared to any Extreme album, it would far and away be "Waiting for the Punchline", not the previous three superior albums. There are only three stand-out songs on the album and the rest are completely forgettable. Let me state again that I am a fan and I hated not liking this album. Also, it should be stated when reviewers say things like "It's growing on me" or "With time it may get better", what they are really saying is that they had higher hopes for the album and it has not lived up to those expectations: They are in denial. A great song or album will hit you within the first or second play through.
1. Star: (4 out of 10) Starts off really strong, until you get to that rediculous chorus.
2. Comfortably Dumb: (3 out of 10) The title says it all. The fact that the title is a play on words to Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" makes it more offensive.
3. Learn to Love: (6 out of 10) Not a bad song but not great.
4. Take Us Alive: (8 out of 10) One of the three best songs on the album. A very interesting song. It's like a cross between country, rock, and blues; as done by Extreme.
5. Run: (10 out of 10) Easily the best song on the album. If the rest of the album had been done in this vain, the album would have been phenominal.
6. Last Hour: (5 out of 10) Hope you enjoy this average song because I couldn't imagine Gary being able to sing this live.
7. Flower Man: (4 out of 10) One of the other reviewers hit this one on the head. It definitely sounds like a Nuno solo song. Not one of his better ones, however.
8. King of the Ladies: (6 out of 10) Relatively catchy but there's just not a lot there.
9. Ghost: (6 out of 10) A decent ballad but is overshadowed by song 11
10. Slide: (4 out of 10) Boring
11. Interface: (9 out of 10) The third best song on the album. Though not an original Extreme song, it sounds better with Gary and Nuno.
12. Sunrise: (4 out of 10) Another boring song.
13. Peace (Saudade): (3 out of 10) I am in total disagreement with the other reviewer who said this was a great way to end the album. This is a terrible song. The album should have ended with Interface.

Absolutely amazing... Dec 01, 2008 This album is absolutely incredible! Gary, Nuno, Patrick and KFigg have done a fantastic job on Extreme's comeback album! Gary is absolutely fantastic on his vocals, especially on "Learn to Love", "Last Hour", "Ghost" and "Interface." Nuno does a great job with "King of the Ladies"...all in all a great album...I definately recommend to everyone!!
I saw these guys in concert in August and all I have to say is that these guys are HOT (in EVERY aspect)!!!! Best concert I have been to EVER...and I have been to a lot!!
Definately FIVE STARS!!

Please don't "sing".. Nov 28, 2008 The vocalist was already proven to be incapable from "waiting for~" album, not to mention Van Halen's destroyed album. This pop singer should stay where he belongs. He is just an insult to such a majestic guitar master as Nuno. For everything else 5 stars, with vocal -2 stars, since the more he tries to "sing", the more destroyed the "song" is.

The boys from Boston return Nov 13, 2008 After being out of the studio for nearly a decade, Extreme returns with a new album. The travelings of vocalist Gary Cherone and Guitarist Nuno Bettencourt have seen them embark on various solo projects, not to mention Cherones one album stint with Van Halen shortly after Extreme broke up around 1998.
The album I have is the European release, which has an extra track that features the song EXAMPLE on it, which was recorded in 1995. Fans of their old stuff will love hearing this track, as it definitely takes one back to the good old days. Regardless, for being away from a while, they still have it. The funk rock elements one may remember from there past are still relevant here, with strong songwriting and polished production. Saudades de Rock seems eclectic and versatile enough to show off bits and pieces that one may have liked from the previous four studio albums, making it a welcome come back. The semi-heavy, rollicking vibe of "Run" is great, and quasi ballads like the melodic piano tune "Peace" help mix up the track listing. Cherone's vocals are still signature, although a little more raspy than the old days.
Some songs don't grab me as much as others, but the album still has enough strength to classify as a good album by a great band that has waited far too long to get back together.
